Little Waldingfield

Earlier in February Dr Sarah Spooner joined the Little Waldingfield History Society for an afternoon looking at archival documents. The Society have received a grant from the All Our Stories scheme from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and are researching the history of the village in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, so the session focussed on the types of documents that the group might come across during their research.

The group spent the afternoon with Sarah looking at historic maps, including Enclosure and Tithe maps, census returns, parish records, local authority records, wills and probate and more – a typical rural parish will have hundreds of documents from this period, so we spent some time discussing which are the most useful documents to look at when starting a research project of this nature.

We hope everyone enjoyed the afternoon, and we are looking forward to hearing how the project develops over the course of the year.

  1. I am delighted to advise that all present thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, and UEA and Dr Spooner could not have been more helpful to us.

The History Society has commenced document research in earnest and are now well into our oral history interviews, though it is of course still early days.

We have additionally booked three places on three of the upcoming UEA workshops, and are very much looking forward to increasing our knowledge on these specialist areas and continuing our relationship with UEA.

I will ensure that we provide regular updates on our project progress.

    Many thanks ……… Andy Sheppard
    Secretary to LW History Society
